OSU Finalizes One-Game Series with Colorado for 2011
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS — Ohio State needed an opponent and the University of Colorado was more than happy to accept the pay-out for a one-game series with the Buckeyes to be played Sept. 24, 2011 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

“This will be a great contest between two outstanding BCS teams that share an excellent football tradition,” Ohio State director of athletics Gene Smith said in a statement.

“I know our fans will enjoy this opportunity.”

The need for a one-game series became necessary when Bowling Green State University was dropped from Ohio State’s 2011 schedule prior to the summer. Since there is no return trip to Boulder planned for the future, the Buckeyes will pay Colorado $1.4 million for their one-time visit to the Horseshoe.

The addition of Colorado completes Ohio State’s 2011 schedule, which already included non-conference games against Akron (Sept. 3) and Toledo (Sept. 10), along with a return trip to Miami (Fla.) on Sept. 10.

Originally the Buckeyes were schedule to play BGSU on Oct. 15, which means their bye week would have come in week four, between the Miami game and the conference-opener against Michigan State. With the switch to Colorado on Sept. 24, the new bye week will be in week seven, between Penn State and Minnesota.

“The matchup with the Buffaloes gives Buckeye fans just another reason to anticipate the 2011 season,” Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel said.

“Our players certainly enjoy games where they can test themselves against the other conferences nationally.”

The Buffaloes have been in member of the Big 12 since its inception in 1996, but announced this offseason that would begin playing the Pac-10 Conference starting in 2012. They were originally scheduled to play Fresno State in a non-conference game on Sept. 24, 2011, but moved that game to Oct. 8 in order to accommodate the high-profile—not to mention high-paying—trip to Columbus.

“Colorado has always recognized the significance of playing marquee opponents in the non-conference portion of our football schedule,” Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn said.

“This is a tremendous opportunity on the national platform to schedule a game with Ohio State, which has been one of the nation’s premier programs and whom we have a lot of respect for.  We’re looking forward to what will be CU’s first trip to the ‘Horseshoe’ in 25 years.”

The two schools last met on the gridiron in 1986, when Ohio State came away with a narrow 13-10 victory in Columbus. The meeting was the second in a home-and-home with Colorado. The Buckeyes topped the Buffaloes 35-13 the previous season in Boulder. They hold a 3-1 edge all-time against Colorado, including a 27-10 victory in the 1977 Orange Bowl.
