Backup Defense Steps Up in Jersey Scrimmage
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS — With a number of their best players filling in for starters on the first-team defense, the backups rose to the occasion Saturday in the annual fall kick scrimmage.
While the first team defense—playing without four starters—allowed just one touchdown during the 140-play scrimmage, the backups held the offense out of the end zone thanks to a huge goal line stand late in the scrimmage.

Here are the highlights from the 2010 fall jersey scrimmage when the second and third teams were on the field.

SECOND TEAM OFFENSE vs. SECOND TEAM DEFENSE

Hall, Berry Carry the Load

-After Cam Heyward forced an incompletion from Pryor to end the first drive by the ones, tailback Jordan Hall carried the load for the second group on their first drive. The sophomore out of Jeannette, Pa. carried the ball four times for 14 yards and picked up a 15-yard facemask penalty.
-Backup quarterback Joe Bauserman completed  a pass to freshman Corey “Philly” Brown on third down, but it was ruled an illegal forward pass because Bauserman had passed the line of scrimmage.
-On the next drive by the twos, it was Jaamal Berry and Kenny Guiton in the backfield. Guiton—who wasn’t wearing a black jersey—had a nice seven-yard scramble and good swing pass to Berry that picked up nine yards, but freshman defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins stuffed Berry on second down. Guiton had Chris Fields wide open down the right sideline on third down, but pressure from defensive tackle Garrett Goebel forced him to overthrow the pass.

Graham Gets His Shot with Twos

-On the third possession it was freshman Taylor Graham getting his chance with the second group, but again Jordan Hall did most of the work. He picked up seven yards up the middle on first down and 11 more running right on third down. Graham completed his only pass of the drive to Zach Boren for four yards and Drew Basil connected on a 46-yard field goal.

Bauserman Struggles

-The next drive by the second group lasted only three plays. Bauserman missed high on a pass intended for freshman T.Y. Williams (how did he miss a 6-foot-6 receiver high?). Bauserman tried to scramble on third-and-long but came up well short of the first down.
-It was more of the same on the following drive, which lasted only four plays. After being sacked by Goebel and Hankins on first down, Bauserman’s third-down pass was dropped by wideout Joe Cech. It left Basil with a 54-yard field goal try, which was no good.
- Bauserman was pressured by Garrett Goebel on the final drive by the twos. He fumbled the snap on second down and threw the ball into the stands on third down.

Guiton Gets Them Going

- Berry again showed great burst on the previous drive, picking up 12 and 7 yards on back-to-back carries. Guiton connected with senior tight end Ricky Crawford for plays of 10 and 9 yards before Devin Barclay hit an 18-yard field goal.

THIRD TEAM OFFENSE vs. THIRD TEAM DEFENSE
12 Plays…and Out

- The third-team offense had the longest drive of the day on its first possession. Kenny Guiton led a 12-play drive down the field, but freshman Drew Basil missed a 58-yard field goal short and to the left. Tailback Jaamal Berry had a 12-yard draw play on the drive where he nearly went the distance.
- On the next possession by the third-team offense, freshman Taylor Graham threw a great screen pass to tailback Jordan Hall, who took it 25 yards before it was called back in a hold. He completed his first pass of the day to freshman James Louis for six yards, but Melvin Fellows put an end to the drive with a sack.
- Justin Siems led the next third-team drive and hit Chris Fields for a 12-yard gain but Basil couldn't connect from 58 yards out.
-Berry had another big draw play on the next drive, picking up 11 yards up the middle, but Guiton was forced to throw the next pass away because of pressure by freshman Darryl Baldwin. Safety Jamie Wood blew up tailback Bo Delande on the next play. It was one of two or three big hits for Wood Saturday.

Goal Line Stand

-The Buckeyes nearly had their second touchdown of the game thanks to Taylor Graham and the third-team offense, but they were stuffed three straight times inside the two-yard line. Graham connected with Ricky Crawford for 26 yards down the sideline and then hit fullback Zach Boren in the right flat for 14 more yards. He threw a fade route in the end zone to freshman Verlon Reed on third down, and he drew a pass interference call, giving the offense a first-and-goal at the two.
-Linebacker Jordan Whiting stuffed Delande on first down and the defense stopped Graham’s quarterback sneak on second down. It gave them a third-and-goal from the one, but Graham bobbled the snap on third down and Basil was forced to kick an 18-yard field goal.
