All Big Ten Teams
By From OSU and Big Ten Press Releases
Senior Jamar Butler was named 2008 First Team All-Big Ten by the league media and to the second team by the conference coaches, the league office announced Sonday.
Butler ended the regular season averaging 14.6 points and 6.0 assists to lead the Buckeyes in both categories. He is the only league player among the Top 5 in both scoring (5th) and assists (1st).
Butler made 84 3-pointers this season to become Ohio State’s all-time leader in that category (222) along with his school record 545 career assists.
“Jamar deserved to make first team All-Big Ten,” Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach, said.
“His hard work over his career and especially this season has paid off with all the Ohio State records he has set and now earning a spot on the All-Big Ten team. If you look at the guards over the years who have earned that honor, it shows what a difficult and remarkable accomplishment it is to earn all-league honors.”
Koufos, a third team All-Big Ten selection (coaches and media) and All-Freshman Team honoree (coaches), contributed 13.7 points and a team-leading 6.8 rebounds a game. He also blocked 57 shots on the year to lead the Buckeyes and had a team-high 174 field goals.
“Kosta improved throughout his freshman year,” Matta said. “His best basketball is ahead. There are many talented freshmen in this league. Kosta earned a spot on the All-Big Ten third team and the all-freshman squad. We are certainly proud of his efforts this season.”
Another Ohio State freshman, Jon Diebler, was selected as the Buckeyes’ Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Butler is the second-consecutive point guard to make first team All-Big Ten. Mike Conley Jr. was selected a year ago as a freshman by the league’s media as well.
